What file format Dusklight needs
Start with a complete image of your own supported retail Twilight Princess disc. The official v2.0.3 README recommends dumping your game and says an ISO can be converted to RVZ with Dolphin or nodtool to save space. The v2.0.3 running instructions list ISO (GCM), RVZ, WIA, WBFS, CISO and GCZ.
A file extension alone does not prove the image is complete or supported. Keep your original dump until you have verified the image and tested it in Dusklight. Extract a downloaded archive containing your own image before selection; renaming an archive to .iso does not convert it.
Before you start: you must own the game
Dusklight does not include copyrighted game assets. Use your own original Twilight Princess disc and make your own dump. Follow the rules applicable where you live; owning a disc does not make an unrelated download your own dump.
For the console method below, prepare a compatible Wii with the Homebrew Channel, CleanRip, and an SD card or USB storage with enough free space. A Wii U in Wii mode can rip Wii discs, but not GameCube discs. Most ordinary computer disc drives cannot read these discs; Dolphin documents a specialized compatible drive method as an alternative.
Homebrew setup varies by console. Follow the linked Dolphin ripping guide and its Homebrew Channel instructions; back up anything important before changing a console or formatting storage.
Dumping a GameCube disc
- Use a Wii that can accept GameCube discs, with the Homebrew Channel and CleanRip installed. Insert your own Twilight Princess GameCube disc and an SD card or USB drive with more than 1.36 GiB free.
- Launch CleanRip from the Homebrew Channel, select the storage device and follow its on-screen prompts to dump the disc. Wait for it to finish before removing the storage.
- Copy the resulting ISO to your computer or target device. A full GameCube image is about 1.36 GiB. Verify it below, then open Dusklight, choose Select Disc Image and select the accessible file.
CleanRip can also run on a GameCube with the necessary homebrew setup. A Wii U cannot rip GameCube discs. See Dolphin’s CleanRip instructions for hardware and setup details.
Dumping a Wii disc
- Use a Wii or a Wii U in Wii mode with the Homebrew Channel and CleanRip. Insert your own Wii disc and a storage device with sufficient free space; Dolphin recommends more than 4.38 GiB for a single-layer disc.
- Start CleanRip, choose the destination, and follow the prompts. With enough storage for the whole dump, Dolphin recommends Chunk Size: Max and New device per chunk: No. Wait until the dump completes.
- Copy every output part to the same folder on your computer. FAT32 can split a Wii ISO even with Max selected. In Dolphin, add the image to the game list, right-click it and choose Convert File to make one ISO or an RVZ. Keep all parts until the conversion and verification succeed.
- Verify the completed image, move it to an accessible folder on your device, then choose it with Select Disc Image in Dusklight.
For smaller storage, multi-device dumping, or dual-layer discs, follow the detailed options in Dolphin’s ripping guide. Do not select only one part of a split dump as if it were a complete single ISO.
Why the Wii version behaves differently in Dusklight
Dusklight is based on a decompilation that currently matches the GameCube version. The official README says that even with a Wii disc, Dusklight uses the GameCube HUD and certain other GameCube-specific behaviors. A Wii disc therefore does not reproduce every aspect of the original Wii presentation.
Verifying your image is good (checksum)
- On a computer, add the folder containing your dump to Dolphin’s game list. Right-click Twilight Princess, open Properties, select Verify, and choose Verify Integrity.
- Read the results and any warnings. Where Dolphin has a matching reference, compare the checksum against the exact game, platform, region and revision. A different edition or an altered image can produce a different result.
- If verification reports a problem, check that all split parts were copied and re-dump your own disc if necessary. If no reference is available, an unknown result alone does not prove the dump is bad.
For a byte-for-byte transfer check, calculate a hash of the same file before and after copying and compare it: Windows PowerShell Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 "path-to-image", macOS shasum -a 256 "path-to-image", or Linux sha256sum "path-to-image". Matching hashes check the copy, not whether the original dump was good. Raw file hashes change when a file is converted to another format.
Dolphin explains its verification tools and Wii reference checks. Do not compare a compressed file’s raw hash directly to an ISO hash.
Dusklight can’t read my disc image — troubleshooting
- Wrong game or edition: v2.0.3 supports commercial GameCube and Wii discs except Korean Wii. Twilight Princess HD for Wii U is not supported.
- Wrong file or incomplete dump: select the image itself, not a ZIP or a single split part. Convert a multipart image to a single ISO or RVZ with Dolphin and verify it.
- File access: copy the image to local storage, confirm the transfer finished, and choose a folder your device’s file picker can access. On mobile, grant access when prompted and avoid cloud-only placeholders.
- Disc read or integrity errors: check the disc and storage, try another reliable storage device, and re-dump your own disc. Compare verification results for the same region and revision.
- Still failing: record the exact error, Dusklight version, device, format and disc region. Check the upstream issue tracker. A graphics startup error may need a platform-specific fix rather than a new image.
For installation and device-specific help, choose a guide from the platform list.
FAQ
Can I download a disc image instead?
No. Do not download a game image from a third party. Dusklight requires you to dump your own copy; neither Dusklight nor this independent guide distributes game files.
Does the region matter?
Yes. In v2.0.3 the official README supports commercial GameCube and Wii releases except Korean Wii. The disc’s region and revision also matter when comparing checksums, and may affect available game languages. Use the matching reference for your own disc.
