Dusklight Randomizer: Setup and Settings Explained

Set up a Dusklight randomizer run, understand every seed setting, and keep the details you need to share it with a friend.

Reviewed · Based on Randomizer v1.0.6 bundled with Dusklight v2.0.3

What the randomizer changes

The built-in Dusklight Randomizer creates a new arrangement of rewards from a seed and your settings. You can expand the pool to shops, NPC gifts, bugs, Poes and more, or shuffle dungeon and other entrances. Logic settings govern what the generator assumes you can reach; a familiar door or reward may no longer lead where you expect.

It is a separate game mode, with seed generation and spoiler-log export built in. It is not the separate TP Randomizer, whose generator states that it is not compatible with Dusklight. You still need your own supported game disc image.

How to enable it in Dusklight v2.0.3

  1. Install Dusklight v2.0.3, supply your own supported disc image and back up existing saves using the Save Manager. Randomizer v1.0.6 is bundled; a separate generator download is not required.
  2. Select the Randomizer game mode in the launch menu and launch the game. If it is missing, check that the bundled Randomizer mod is enabled in the Mods menu and inspect its log for errors.
  3. At the Randomizer file-select screen, open Seed Options, Hints, Starting Inventory and Excluded Locations to configure your run. In Seed Management, enter a Seed String or leave it blank for a random one, then choose Generate Seed.
  4. In the Play tab, choose the generated seed under Selected Seed and select Start Randomizer. Follow the file-select prompts to begin a new run.

The in-game Randomizer menu also exposes configuration and seed management. Changing settings does not retroactively change a seed already generated; generate a new seed after making changes.

Randomizer settings explained, one by one

This list covers the settings defined in the v1.0.6 settings table. Some count controls appear only when their corresponding requirement is selected; labels in the interface may be shorter. Default settings are not necessarily the same as the suggestions below.

Item / location randomization

  • Golden Bugs: Shuffle the rewards at Golden Bug locations.
  • Sky Characters: Shuffle rewards at Sky Character locations.
  • Gifts From NPCs: Include NPC gift locations in the shuffle.
  • Shop Items: Include shop inventories in the shuffle.
  • Hidden Skills: Shuffle the rewards at golden wolf locations.
  • Hidden Rupees: Include hard-to-find rupee locations.
  • Freestanding Rupees: Include rupees found in the open.
  • Poe Souls: Keep Poes vanilla or shuffle overworld, dungeon, or all Poe rewards.
  • Ilia Memory Quest: Keep the quest vanilla or shuffle a selected quest item into the world.
  • Item Scarcity: Choose Vanilla, Minimal, or Plentiful item pools.
  • Trap Item Frequency: Set how often non-major items are replaced with traps, from None to Nightmare.
  • Small Keys: Place keys in their vanilla locations, their own dungeon, any dungeon, the overworld, or anywhere; Keysy opens their locks.
  • Big Keys: Choose the same placement scopes as small keys, or use Keysy to open boss doors.
  • Maps and Compasses: Choose a placement scope or start with all maps and compasses.
  • Hyrule Castle Big Key Requirements: Set the condition for the key gate: None, Fused Shadows, Mirror Shards, Dungeons, Poe Souls, or Hearts. The corresponding count control sets the threshold.
  • Hyrule Castle Big Key Fused Shadows: Set the required count when that gate uses Fused Shadows.
  • Hyrule Castle Big Key Mirror Shards: Set the required count when that gate uses Mirror Shards.
  • Hyrule Castle Big Key Dungeons: Set the required dungeon count for that gate.
  • Hyrule Castle Big Key Poe Souls: Set the required Poe Soul count for that gate.
  • Hyrule Castle Big Key Hearts: Set the required heart count for that gate.
  • Dungeon Rewards Can Be Anywhere: Allow Fused Shadows and Mirror Shards outside dungeon reward checks.
  • Small Keys on Bosses: Allow small keys at boss heart container or dungeon reward checks.
  • Unrequired Dungeons Are Barren: Keep items necessary to beat the game out of dungeons that are not required.

Excluded Locations: select checks where the generator should not place progression items; these checks are not simply removed from the shuffle. Starting Inventory: choose equipment and other starting items independently. Both are separate tabs rather than single on/off settings.

Entrance randomization

  • Randomize Starting Spawn: Start in a random area instead of outside Link’s house.
  • Randomize Dungeon Entrances: Shuffle dungeon destinations; the On + Hyrule Castle choice includes the castle.
  • Randomize Boss Entrances: Shuffle the destinations behind boss doors.
  • Randomize Grotto Entrances: Shuffle grotto destinations.
  • Randomize Cave Entrances: Shuffle cave doors and transitions.
  • Randomize Interior Entrances: Shuffle entrances to interior areas.
  • Randomize Overworld Entrances: Shuffle transitions between overworld areas.
  • Decouple Double Door Entrances: Allow the left and right doors of a randomized pair to lead to different places.
  • Decouple Entrances: Allow the return exit to lead somewhere other than the entrance you used.

Entrance and spawn shuffles automatically enable some story skips. For example, cave shuffle also clears Faron Twilight, while overworld shuffle clears all three Twilight regions. Check the settings after enabling them.

Difficulty and logic settings

  • Logic Rules: All Locations Reachable aims to make every location accessible; Beatable Only guarantees completion under the logic but not every check; No Logic does not guarantee a beatable seed.
  • Hyrule Barrier Requirements: Choose Open, Vanilla, Fused Shadows, Mirror Shards, Dungeons, Poe Souls, or Hearts for castle access.
  • Hyrule Barrier Fused Shadows: Set the required Fused Shadow count when selected.
  • Hyrule Barrier Mirror Shards: Set the required Mirror Shard count when selected.
  • Hyrule Barrier Dungeons: Set the required dungeon count when selected.
  • Hyrule Barrier Poe Souls: Set the required Poe Soul count when selected.
  • Hyrule Barrier Hearts: Set the required heart count when selected.
  • Palace of Twilight Requirements: Choose the condition for opening the Mirror of Twilight.
  • Faron Woods Logic: Choose whether Midna restricts leaving Faron Woods before Forest Temple is complete.
  • Mirror Chamber Access: Choose the condition for accessing the Mirror Chamber.
  • Skip Prologue: Begin with the opening prologue completed.
  • Faron Twilight Cleared: Begin with the sewers and Faron Twilight completed.
  • Eldin Twilight Cleared: Begin with Eldin Twilight completed.
  • Lanayru Twilight Cleared: Begin with Lanayru Twilight completed.
  • Skip Midna’s Desperate Hour: Begin with that post-Lakebed sequence completed.
  • Skip Minor Cutscenes: Skip minor introductions and explanations.
  • Skip Major Cutscenes: Automatically skip cutscenes that are skippable.
  • Unlock Map Regions: Start with as much of the map filled in as the selected Twilight state permits.
  • Open Door of Time: Start with the Temple of Time statue placed and its door open.
  • Active Goron Mines Magnets: Start with most Goron Mines magnet switches activated.
  • Lower Hyrule Castle Chandelier: Start with one main-hall chandelier lowered.
  • Skip Bridge Donation: Build the Eldin–Castle Town bridge automatically after Eldin and Lanayru Twilight are complete.
  • Starting Form: Choose Human or Wolf Link.
  • Bonks Do Damage: Choose whether bonking causes damage.
  • Starting Time of Day: Choose morning, noon, evening, or night.
  • Logic Transform Anywhere: Tell logic whether it may expect the separate Transform Anywhere game setting.
  • Logic Increase Wallet Capacity: Tell logic whether it may assume the separate Bigger Wallets game setting.
  • Logic Damage Multiplier: Tell logic which separate damage multiplier or instant-death setting to assume.
  • Lakebed Does Not Require Water Bombs: Remove the boulder blocking Lakebed’s entrance.
  • Arbiters Does Not Require Bulblin Camp: Start with Bulblin Camp cleared for access to Arbiter’s Grounds.
  • Snowpeak Does Not Require Reekfish Scent: Start with the scent needed for the Snowpeak blizzard.
  • Sacred Grove Does Not Require Skull Kid: Start with the Lost Woods chase complete.
  • City Does Not Require Filled Skybook: Place the City in the Sky cannon at Lake Hylia from the start.
  • Goron Mines Entrance: Choose Closed, No Wrestling, or Open access.
  • Temple of Time Sword Requirement: Choose which sword, if any, opens the door to the past.
  • Back Slice as Sword: Allow logic to expect swordless Back Slice damage.
  • Ball and Chain Webs: Allow logic to expect Ball and Chain to break webs.

The three settings beginning with Logic describe what the generator may assume about separate Dusklight gameplay settings. Match the actual game settings to those assumptions before playing. Logic is a model, and bugs can still occur.

Hints

Hint counts and destinations are configured separately. When a hint type is enabled for both Midna and signs, its hints are divided between them.

  • Number of Path Hints: Choose how many path hints to generate.
  • Path Hints on Midna: Allow path hints in Midna’s hint text.
  • Path Hints on Hint Signs: Choose whether path hints appear on overworld signs, dungeon signs, or both.
  • Number of Barren Hints: Choose how many barren-area hints to generate.
  • Barren Hints on Midna: Allow barren hints in Midna’s text.
  • Barren Hints on Hint Signs: Choose where barren hints appear on signs.
  • Number of Item Hints: Choose how many item hints to generate.
  • Item Hints on Midna: Allow item hints in Midna’s text.
  • Item Hints on Hint Signs: Choose where item hints appear on signs.
  • Number of Location Hints: Choose how many location hints to generate.
  • Location Hints on Midna: Allow location hints in Midna’s text.
  • Location Hints on Hint Signs: Choose where location hints appear on signs.
  • Prioritize Remote Location Hints: Favor hints for more remote locations.
  • Agitha Hints: Control hints about major rewards from turning in Golden Bugs.

Recommended presets (beginner / standard / chaos)

These are suggested configurations, not names of built-in presets. Start with Reset Settings to Default in Seed Options, which also clears starting items and excluded locations, then make the changes below. Use Save Preset in Seed Management if you want to reuse one.

  • Beginner: Logic Rules: All Locations Reachable; Item Scarcity: Plentiful; Trap Item Frequency: None; all entrance randomization and decoupling off. Keep keys in their own dungeon and add hints if you want guidance.
  • Standard: All Locations Reachable; Vanilla item scarcity; no traps; turn on Gifts From NPCs, Shop Items and Hidden Skills. Try Small Keys and Big Keys in Own Dungeon; leave entrances off for a more familiar map.
  • Chaos: All Locations Reachable; turn on dungeon, boss, grotto, cave, interior and overworld entrance shuffles; try Decouple Entrances, keys Anywhere and Many traps. Expect a longer run and take notes. No Logic is a separate experimental choice and may generate an unbeatable seed.

Sharing and replaying a seed

  1. After generating a seed, leave its configuration unchanged, open Seed Management and choose Copy Permalink. It represents the current settings and seed string, not a selected older seed. Record the Dusklight and Randomizer versions too.
  2. On a compatible installation, copy the permalink to the clipboard and choose Paste Permalink in Seed Management. This replaces current settings; it is not pasted into the Seed String field.
  3. Verify the imported options, generate the seed, and select it in the Play tab. Keep the generated seed data as well as the permalink: use Export Seed Data to preserve it, and Export Spoiler Log separately if you want a solution reference.

A seed string alone is not enough to describe different settings. Older permalinks or generated seeds may be incompatible with later versions; keep the original version and backup rather than assuming updates reproduce an identical run. A spoiler log reveals placements, so share it only with players who want spoilers.

Known issues with the randomizer

Dusklight v2.0.3 fixed several earlier problems, including boss exits, entrance logic and a Kakariko Twilight softlock. That does not establish that every seed is bug-free. The public tracker has reports of incorrect overworld entrance spoiler logs and an older seed crashing after an update; individual reports do not prove every v1.0.6 seed is affected.

If you get stuck, check settings and hint or spoiler data, note the versions and seed permalink, and test without other gameplay mods. Preserve your save and seed data before updating. Search the Randomizer issue tracker and include reproduction details when reporting a problem.

FAQ

Do I need to finish the game first?

No completion requirement is stated in the bundled Randomizer setup. Familiarity with the original game helps, because the shuffle changes where progression is found; a beginner configuration and hints make the first run easier to follow.

Does the randomizer work with mods?

Some mods can work alongside it, but compatibility depends on what each changes. The Twilit Essentials listing warns that it is not fully compatible with the Randomizer. Check each author’s notes, test one mod at a time and keep backups. See the Dusklight mods guide.
